Itchy, dry skin? Here’s how to optimize your air conditioning

Air conditioning

In 2023, Spain has set new records for scorching temperatures multiple times. There were instances of extreme heat prior to the commencement of summer, while heatwaves have displayed their formidable ability to wreak havoc both on the streets and elsewhere.

Air conditioning has become an essential requirement in households nowadays. Nevertheless, statistics provided by Idealista, a Spanish real estate firm, reveal that merely 33% of homes in Spain were equipped with air conditioning systems by 2022.

A significant portion of people worldwide cannot use air conditioning due to lack of access to energy. Additionally, those who are fortunate enough to have AC at home may not always utilize it properly. Professionals suggest taking occasional breaks from using air conditioning to promote energy efficiency and cost savings. Pausing the AC intermittently can also improve our personal comfort and prevent damage to our skin, as prolonged exposure to air currents can negatively impact the skin's health.

Ideal Temperature Selection

Let's begin from the start. What factors should we consider while purchasing an air conditioner? Araceli de la Fuente, the corporate communication director at Mitsubishi Electric, emphasizes the significance of opting for equipment with the highest A+++ energy classification. This particular label, depicted in a deep shade of green, assures the buyer that the unit will consume electricity in the most optimal and efficient manner.

If your air conditioning is getting up there in age or doesn't have a great energy efficiency rating, don't stress. You can still find ways to save energy and stay comfortable without breaking a sweat. The crucial factor here is the temperature you choose. Not only will this help you save on energy costs, but it will also prevent any sudden summer chills. According to De la Fuente, the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) suggests keeping your air conditioning set between 75 and 78ºF throughout the summer.

The fluctuation in temperature, which varies by three degrees, holds more importance than it appears and is influenced by the specific space. According to the specialist, maintaining a temperature of around 75°F in a living room would be ideal as it allows for greater flexibility. However, it is worth noting that this is slightly lower than the recommended temperature of 78°F for a bedroom.

Attempting to gradually decrease the warmth within your residence is far more effective than implementing abrupt shifts in temperature. In order to minimize your energy expenses, it is thus advisable to maintain a constant temperature throughout the day. In addition to the usual strategies of fortifying your home, such as lowering blinds and putting up awnings to block direct sunlight, experts recommend ensuring that your dwelling has proper thermal insulation (which is equally important during winter). If feasible, it would also be beneficial to program your air conditioner to regulate the temperature at any given moment, even if you are not present.

There are numerous aspects that complicate the precise assessment of the financial impact caused by using air conditioning (such as room temperature, room layout, and the specific device employed). Nevertheless, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) approximates that running an air conditioner for an hour amounts to approximately $0.35. It is crucial to consider the fluctuating electricity costs, which vary depending on the time of day.

Keep Filters Clean For Better Health

Proper upkeep of your air conditioning system plays a significant role in determining your energy expenses. That's exactly why Mitsubishi Electric emphasizes the significance of hiring an expert to conduct regular inspections and perform thorough filter cleaning. By doing so, you can ensure that your equipment operates at its best, resulting in cost savings. Neglecting filter maintenance can lead to a buildup of dirt, forcing your device to consume excessive electricity.

In addition, to further cut down on expenses at home, it is recommended to clean the filters prior to the start of the air conditioning season. This, along with ensuring proper daily ventilation, will help prevent the accumulation of dust and allergies.

Effects Of AC On The Skin

If you are frequently exposed to air conditioning, whether it be at home or at work, you may have noticed that it has a significant impact on your skin: it becomes dry. The reason for this is the lack of humidity in the air, which causes dehydration in both the nasal mucosa and the skin. Dr. Maria Florencia Vera Morandini, a dermatology expert, explains that low environmental humidity leads to moisture loss in the skin, resulting in a dehydrated, pale, and dull appearance. To combat this, you can use a humidifier to replenish some of the lost moisture in the air. However, if you want direct benefits for your skin, Dr. Vera Morandini recommends using topical products like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, cholesterol stress, and fatty acids. These components are naturally present in our skin's lipid barrier and help keep it hydrated.

If you are not careful with your air conditioning system, you may experience similar skin issues during the summer as you do in the winter. Dr. Morandini explains that the low temperatures and dryness of winter can cause a decrease in moisture in the outer layer of your skin, which can result in increased itchiness and slight redness. People with sensitive skin are especially prone to experiencing these symptoms.

When there is no beach or swimming pool available, air conditioning becomes our greatest friend in order to escape the scorching heat. However, in order to maximize the benefits of these devices, there is nothing superior to utilizing them effectively.
