Teaching math is hard. Learning high-level math is also hard. ChatGPT is a website that helps teachers explain math better. Forbes wrote that more than half of the teachers surveyed use ChatGPT. Some teachers use it every day. ChatGPT can explain complicated things in simple ways. But for advanced math problems, it may not always be right.

Researchers from around the world put the generative AI program to the test. They gave it tough math questions at a graduate level. ChatGPT didn't answer all the questions correctly. However, it provided some correct answers. This shows that it can work as a unique search engine for math teachers and researchers.

Sometimes, people say ChatGPT is really good at math. Other times, they say it's really bad. Frieder Simon, a researcher at Oxford, says both sides are exaggerated. ChatGPT did great on one test, but did terrible on another. Simon says that ChatGPT is okay for some people, but not for everyone.

ChatGPT is good at taking tests in math for high school and college level. It did really well on the SAT math test, ranked at 89%. It got a B on an expert's exam on quantum computing. The expert's name is Scott Aaronson.

ChatGPT needs more tests to know its limit. Many people talked about ChatGPT's skills in passing standard tests. Leah Henrickson (digital media professor) said that these tests only recall facts and don't evaluate intelligence. ChatGPT can pass because it memorizes it during training.

Simon and his team came up with tough math questions to see if ChatGPT could handle problem-solving. They wanted to go further than just checking if it got the answer right or wrong. They wanted to inspect how ChatGPT fails and why. They made a tricky test called GHOSTS, using prompts from different fields.
