1969 Opel GT Is Junkyard Treasure

Ford Motor Company

In the late 1950s, General Motors started bringing in some of their Opel models that were made in Germany and were sold through Buick dealerships in the US. During this time, Vauxhalls, which were built in Britain, were also getting sold at Pontiac dealers. From the late 60s to the mid 70s, Opels became more mainstream in America and cars such as the Manta, Kadett and GT became a common sight. Our feature today is on the Junkyard Gem, which happens to be a two-seater sports car called the GT. It has a rich history that can be traced back to GM's design of the 1960s.

The last cars with the Opel branding to be sold in this area were the Isuzu Geminis with rear-wheel drive (which were related to the Chevrolet Chevette) and featured a mixture of names from Buick, Opel, and Isuzu. The 1979 model, known as the Buick Opel by Isuzu, was the final car of that type. Despite this, we've witnessed many Opels with different brandings sold in the United States. Out of all the Opels that were driven on the roads of America, the GT was undoubtedly the most impressive.

During the 1970s in America, people viewed the Manta as a small German version of the Camaro and the GT as a small German version of the Corvette. Interestingly, the 1968 Opel GT and 1968 Corvette share similar design features and both are influenced by the 1964 Pontiac Banshee XP-833, designed by John DeLorean.

From 1969 to 1973, the GT was made available for purchase in this area. They brought back the GT name in 2007 for the German version of the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky (however, some chose to purchase the South Korean version, called the Daewoo G2X).

In simpler terms: The engine in this car is a 1.9-liter Opel cam-in-head straight-four. It's like a pushrod engine but with the cam moved up to the head and pushrods removed. The engine still has cam lifters and rocker arms, but it's slightly lower without a true overhead-cam design. If this is the original engine, it has 67 hp and 62 lb-ft. The GT is slower than the Corvette, but at 1815 pounds, it can still move.

The vehicle's exterior displays some rust, which isn't too extreme, while its interior is completely ruined. In Europe, a GT that's in this state would be deemed worthy of being refurbished, but in North America, even those that are in good condition aren't valued highly.

This wasn't intended for overweight elderly veterans of the Battle of Stalingrad!

Instead, trendy German youths joyrode in the rain.

The advertisements in the US market were not as thrilling.
