Neuralink got approval to test their brain implant in humans. The company is owned by Elon Musk. The device is meant to help people with disabilities or brain injuries. It works by connecting the brain to a computer. This technology could have many useful applications in the future.

The company shared the news on Twitter on Thursday evening. They haven't said anything else about the study. The study isn't on the list of clinical trials by the government.

The Food and Drug Administration people didn't say if they approved. Carly Kempler, who talks to the press, said in an email that they know about Musk's announcement.

Neuralink wants to connect computers to the nervous system. Other groups are doing the same thing. They want to help with brain problems and help people with brain injuries. There are many other uses too.

Switzerland researchers wrote in Nature about an implant that restores communication between the brain and spinal cord. This implant helps a paralyzed man walk and stand. Clinicaltrials.gov reports over 30 trials for brain or spine computer interface.

Elon Musk owns Twitter and is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. He said in December that his team is asking regulators to test the Neuralink device.

The device is small and put into the skull. Thin wires go straight into the brain. Musk wants to use it to help people see and operate digital devices. He also thinks the device can help people with spinal cord injuries.

Musk presented a device last year. Rajesh Rao from the University of Washington said Neuralink is not ahead in brain-computer interface achievements. But he thinks the hardware is quite advanced.

We don't know how good these devices or similar interfaces will work or if they're safe. Neuralink's interface is an "investigational device" for now. Clinical trials will gather data on safety and effectiveness.

Neuralink tweeted this week. They aren't looking for study participants yet. More details coming soon.
