Oman has entered into two agreements worth a total of $10 billion. These pacts were signed by the energy minister of Oman, Al Aufi, and delegates from Hyport Duqm. This marks the initiation of the second tender round for Oman's green hydrogen project.
Oman signed two additional agreements for the advancement of eco-friendly hydrogen initiatives in the Duqm region. These projects are estimated to receive an investment of approximately $10 billion. Additionally, Oman also launched the second phase of the ongoing auction process.
A partnership between POSCO, a company based in South Korea, and Engie SA, a French energy firm, recently finalized the initial deal to harness approximately 5 GW of wind and solar energy in Al Wusta Governorate. The primary objective of this collaboration is to generate 200,000-220,000 tonnes of hydrogen.
The next agreement revolves around a partnership between Hyport Duqm, a collaboration between Belgium's DEME and Oman's energy firm OQ.
The signed contract includes the initial phase of a long-running project aimed at producing approximately 50,000 tons of hydrogen and ammonia within the Duqm free zone.
Hydrom has been granted three undertakings for the generation of environmentally friendly hydrogen in the Duqm region, coinciding with this particular phase. These ventures, with a projected expenditure of roughly 20 billion US dollars, will be established across an expansive expanse measuring 960 square kilometers (370 square miles).
According to Al Aufi, the vetting period will take around two to two and a half months, and the round will finish by the conclusion of the initial three months of 2024.
The land areas secured for generating hydrogen during the initial phase of the bidding process will guarantee that Oman successfully reaches its goal of producing approximately 1 million metric tons of environmentally-friendly hydrogen by the conclusion of the next ten years.
Al-Aufi stated, "We will be examining the paths and exploring the most ideal choices to decrease the overall expenses of manufacturing hydrogen and ensure that the initiatives in Oman generating environmentally-friendly hydrogen and ammonia are as competitive as possible."
