Based on AAA reservation data, there has been a 4% increase in travel within the country, while bookings for overseas trips, encompassing accommodations, airfare, rental vehicles, and cruises, have surged by an impressive 44%.

The cost of gasoline remains about the same as it was last year. AAA reports that the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas during the Labor Day weekend in the previous year was $3.78. Presently, the national average on Sunday stands at $3.82.

Several individuals in Columbia mentioned that they planned on remaining at their residences in order to cut costs on transportation expenditures.

Renita Goins expressed her concern about the exorbitant gas prices and highlighted the insufficient influx of funds into the economy, making it challenging for us to finance such travels.

The price of gas in various areas of the state is hovering around $3.49 per gallon for regular fuel. This represents a decrease of four cents compared to the previous week, but an increase of five cents compared to this same period last year. In Jefferson City, motorists are feeling the pinch the most, as they are shelling out an average of $3.60 per gallon. On the other hand, Joplin residents are enjoying a lower price, with just $3.29 per gallon for regular gas. AAA reports that Columbia falls right in between these two extremes, with an average price of $3.55 per gallon for regular fuel.

Sarah Steele, a resident of Columbia, mentioned that she shells out more than $300 each month on gasoline expenses.

"Given the current cost of everything, it's not the most favorable period for us to embark on a journey," Steele stated. "Hence, we are prioritizing staying within the confines of our abode as much as we can."
