Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd), stated in a written response during a session in Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Currently, a total of 86 airports throughout the nation have adopted sustainable energy practices. Among these airports, 55 of them rely entirely on green energy for their energy needs, as stated by the Minister of Union.

Nevertheless, the utilization of traditional energy sources is the main contributor to carbon release in airports. Consequently, substituting non-renewable energy with environmentally friendly alternatives aids in diminishing the airport's carbon impact. Hence, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has recommended that all operational airports with scheduled flights and developers of future Greenfield Airports strive to attain Carbon Neutrality & Net Zero. This endeavor encompasses the implementation of green energy, he stated.

Airports around the world are consistently prioritizing the utilization of renewable or eco-friendly energy. In the most recent development, Bhubaneswar airport has completely transitioned to sustainable sources for all its energy needs, solidifying its position as one of India's completely sustainable airports.

According to reports, the airport has recently set up a solar power plant on the operational grounds. This plant has a capacity of 4 megawatts and is comprised of 10,530 photovoltaic modules, with each module having a power output of 380 watts. The entire area utilized for this project spans across 13.28 acres. The cost of this venture is estimated at 18.75 crore.
